Subsidies drive Murray Darling Basin extractions
The four-billion-dollars spent on saving water in the Murray Darling Basin, may have funded an even greater extraction of water.
A study published in the Resources, Conservation & Recycling journal, found those who received funds under the national Murray Darling Basin irrigation efficiency program extracted up to 28-percent more water.
Rural reporter Sophie Clarke caught up with study co-author Professor Richard Kingsford to hear more about it.
