The orange-bellied parrot is being saved from extinction

ROSS AND JOHN

The orange-bellied parrot is making a comeback.

Pearcedale’s Moonlit Sanctuary has been working hard to save the critically endangered bird, with 25 new specimens being bred this season.

The sanctuary has been rewarded with a Sustainability Award for its efforts.

Director Michael Johnson told Ross and John the parrot is similar to a panda in its reluctance to breed.

“There’s probably only about 20 in the wild at the moment,” Mr Johnson said.
