The winners and losers of the 2018 AFL fixture

Sportsday

It’s one of the most important days on the football calendar when the AFL fixture is released.

And everyone has a view on who comes out on top.

Fox Sports reporter Tom Morris joined Sportsday to share his thoughts on the winners and losers in the fixture.

Winners:

  • Collingwood
  • Carlton
  • Fremantle

Losers:

  • Melbourne
  • Gold Coast

But 3AW Football commentator Bruce Eva disagreed, saying he believed Collingwood’s season could be shredded half-way through the season.

“You’ve got the unique situation, they play six games in 30 days between rounds five and 10,” he said.

AFL General Manager Travis Auld oversees the fixture and joined Sportsday to explain the anomalies and factors that influence the schedule.

“The winners and losers are different depending on who you talk to,” he said.

“It sparks a whole lot of different views.”

He said Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon was “passionate” about the loss of the Good Friday game.

“I’ve spoken to Peter about it today, we made it really clear when we announced we would play a game on Good Friday it won’t necessarily be the same two teams,” he said.
