‘There is one big hole in this case’: Angry Neil Mitchell slams Jason Roberts defence

NEIL MITCHELL

An angry Neil Mitchell says suggestions convicted cop killer Jason Roberts is innocent are causing victims needless pain.

And he says the suggestions ignore the testimony of a key witness – one of the killed officers.

Roberts is one of two people jailed over the murder of police officers Gary Silk and Rodney Miller in 1998.

The Herald Sun today reports for top detective and current Community Safety Trustee Ron Iddles believes Roberts is innocent on the balance of probability.

“There is one big hole in this case as I can see it,” Neil Mitchell said today.

“Iddles says ‘There is no witness who ever saw two offenders’.

“Well, there was.

“Senior Constable Miller gave a dying statement … to Senior Constable Glenn Pullin. He said there were two gunmen.”

Others comments Mr Miller made to Mr Pullin were later proven correct.

“Why was it ignored?” Neil Mitchell said of Mr Iddles’ affidavit.

Neil Mitchell also revealed he had spoken to Carmel Arthur, former wife of Mr Miller, about the matter this morning.

“She will not speak publicly but she is upset, obviously.

“She and the other families deserve better.”
