Tom Elliott clashes with the Human Resources Institute over “racial profiling” in the business world

TOM ELLIOTT

Tom Elliott has clashed with the Human Resources Institute over “racial profiling” in the business world.

The issue was raised after a Financial Review report showed 30 per cent of Deloitte staff are of Asian descent.

The Chairman of the Australian Human Resources Institute, Peter Wilson, told Tom many financial firms believe people of Asian background help with contacts in the key Asian market, and can relate to those clients on a cultural level.

But Tom said making conclusions about a person based on their physical or cultural characteristics is “rubbish”.

“It’s racial profiling,” Tom said.

“If you’re saying that one race is better than another at certain things, you’re saying that some races are worse, which is a form of racism.”
