Police are appealing for witnesses after a 17 year-old boy was assaulted at a Coles in Altona.

The teen was kicked in the back after being followed and approached by a group of people around 4pm on February 4.

Chief Industry Affairs Officer, Fleur Brown, says it’s not okay for customers or retail staff to be subjected to violence.

“Retail crime has been a top agenda item … It has been a really high-anxiety environment,” she told Jacqui Felgate.

Press PLAY to hear the protections she wants in place for retail workers
