Police have noticed a concerning trend of violent and disruptive behaviour at airports and on planes.

Australian Federal Police say there’s been a rise in “air-rage” stemming from travel mishaps such as missed flights, delays and lost baggage this year.

From March to September, federal police were called to 473 incidents at Melbourne Airport, including 30 cases of offensive behaviour or intoxication, 195 cases of public disturbance and 18 incidents relating to assault.

Author and retired A380 captain James Nixon says constant changes at airports mean travellers are on edge.

“Every time you go to the airport it has changed because they’re always building sites,” he told Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell.

“Just navigating through with your baggage and all the drama that goes with it causes people to be stressed out before they get on the flight.”
