The Chief Commissioner has been challenged to spend a night behind the counter of a convenience store without a weapon after he rejected suggestions Victoria wasn’t safe.

Graham Ashton said it was “complete and utter garbage” to suggest the state was unsafe after four service station’s in the city’s west were robbed the night before.

His comments left the CEO of the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores far from impressed.

“Spend an evening in one of these stores,” Jeff Rogut said on 3AW Mornings.

“Without any armament, just a counter between him and the customers, or these violent thugs, and see how safe he feels.”
