Police crack down on e-scooters after rider death

Police are today cracking down on e-scooters after the death of a 28-year-old who fell off an e-scooter last month.

Officers this morning targeted e-scooters in Brunswick in the first of several blitzes on commuter routes into the city.

Privately-owned e-scooters that can travel at over 10km/h or emit over 200 watts are illegal.

Those caught riding them face a $925 fine, and will have their e-scooter impounded.

Victoria Police Acting Inspector Darren Kenos says several e-scooter riders were stung this morning.

“To be honest we are tired of having to go to families and let them know that their family member has sustained life-threatening injuries or died,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“These e-scooters are capable of doing speeds 50km/h plus and the margin for error is very small.

“If you do come off you will sustain serious injuries, if not lose your life, and I don’t think it’s worth it, to be honest.”

A 28-year-old male who was not wearing a helmet lost control of an e-scooter in Pascoe Vale on September 22 and sadly died in hospital last night.
