Police say a teenage girl caught almost 40km/h over the limit less than two hours after getting her licence wasn’t trying to be a hoon.

But they say it’s a crucial reminder that drivers need to concentrate at all times behind the wheel.

The 18-year-old has lost her licence for at least six months after she was caught travelling 79km/h in a 40 zone on the Warburton Highway.

She’d only just got her licence.

“I was a little gobsmacked,” leading senior constable Aidan Williams told 3AW Mornings.

He said while the driver “didn’t come across as somebody who was trying to blatantly trying to speed”, it was still incredibly dangerous.

Police hope it spreads an important message.

“Thankfully she didn’t hit anybody because it was 39 over the speed limit,” leading senior constable Williams said.
