Police have been left frustrated, stunned and extremely concerned by the behaviour of some motorists on the states roads during Operation Compass.

Some 8500 road breaches were detected since the road safety blitz began on the Melbourne Cup long weekend and ended at midnight.

290 of those were for drink driving, 214 for drug driving.

Five people died in three separate crashes on the final two days of the road safety blitz.

Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said some of the offences detected, like a 15-year-old being caught after allegedly fleeing a car detected doing 180km/h, beggared belief.

“It is just unbelievable,” he said.
