Police officer charged with murder
UPDATE: A Victorian police officer has appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with murder this morning.
3AW Mornings understands the officer was arrested about 7am today after a two-year investigation.
The charge follows a shooting death during a roadside intercept at Windsor in August, 2013.
The officer was on duty at the time.
Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton described it as a sad day for the force.
It’s the first time in almost 30 years a Victorian officer has faced such a charge.
In court, the officer’s defence raised concerns about his safety in prison due to his occupation.
The court also heard the man has serious mental health issues, which require regular medication.
He has been remanded until January 27.
