A man has been charged after a police officer sustained “significant injuries” after he was stabbed “a number of times” at Torquay on Monday.

The 49-year-old has been charged with one count of attempted murder and assaulting an emergency service worker on duty.

The charges come after police attended an address on Golden Beach Way about 4.30pm on Monday, along with another agency, to conduct a welfare check on a resident.

Upon arrival, a man allegedly rushed at police officers with a knife.

Police deployed a taser and OC spray, but one member was stabbed a number of times.

The male police officer is receiving treatment in hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
