Police shoot and kill man allegedly carrying out armed robbery

Police have shot a man dead after happening upon an alleged armed robbery in Melbourne’s outer-east overnight.
Detectives are still on the scene at a bottle shop on Park Road, Park Orchards, after the shooting about 9pm last night.
3AW Police reporter Pat Mitchell told Ross and John police were already in the area at the time investigating a series of past armed robberies and just happened to catch the armed man in the store.
“They were investigating a series of armed robberies that happened at this bottle-o last year, including one where a man held up the store with machete,” Pat said.
“They happened upon it, they didn’t have prior knowledge of it taking place.”

It’s believed the man was attempting to hold up the store with a sawn-off shotgun, witnesses say they heard police fire “five to six” shots at the man.
The 48-year-old man died at the scene.
A 49-year-old man and a 50-year-old man were also arrested shortly after the incident.
