Police will deploy “significant resources” to St Kilda this evening amid fears of further violence on the foreshore.

Last night the Port Phillip Council voted 6-3 to implement a 24 hour alcohol ban across St Kilda until March 31.

Anyone caught in breach of the law faces a $200 on the spot fine and an additional penalty if carrying glass.

Inspector Jason Kelly told Neil Mitchell, the warmer the weather, the greater the risk of violence and anti-social behaviour.

“Tonight we have significant resources deployed along the St Kilda foreshore, and into the entertainment areas of Fitzroy Street and Acland Street,” he said.

“We have invested heavily in the next couple of days because the weather is quite hot.”

“Do we extend it to any place other than a licensed venue?” Neil said.

“I hope they don’t turn up, but police fear they will and need to be ready.”
