Political junk mail could be banned under a proposed new law.
Currently, it is not illegal to put campaign material in letterboxes marked ‘no junk mail’, but Independent MP Andrew Wilkie is introducing a bill to change that.
Mr Wilkie’s bill would prevent Australia Post from delivering unaddressed political mail.
Campaign strategist Toby Ralph told Neil Mitchell the bill would hit lesser-known candidates hardest.
‘People won’t vote for someone whose name they don’t know,’ he said.
Mr Ralph said letterbox flyers don’t actually work very well despite parties spending millions of dollars on it.
