Pool supply shortage could leave Victorian swimmers at risk

A “perfect storm” of warm weather, COVID-driven staff and import shortages and people staying at home has created a shortage in pool cleaning chemicals and supplies.

John O’Brien, chief executive of Poolwerx, told 3AW Drive it was potentially dangerous.

“Swimming pools are being used like never before,” he said.

“And we’ve got a shortage of pool chemicals, equipment and tech.

“Over the next week we’re going to see a lot of green pools in Victoria.”

And that’s not to be sneezed at, with Mr O’Brien warning green pools increased the risk of contracting “bugs” while swimming, which can lead to gastro, or worse.

“People often blame the BBQ or the snags, but it’s normally the swimming pool that gave it to you,” he said.
