Popular rat-runs could be hit in a ‘game-changer’ coming to Victoria’s speed camera network
RUMOUR CONFIRMED
Popular rat-runs previously immune to mobile speed cameras could soon become big revenue-raisers.
As first reported on Ross and John’s Rumour File and confirmed by Neil Mitchell, Victoria is testing new speed cameras that are snapping drivers in hot spots that were previously unwatched.
Unlike current speed cameras, the new cameras use a “tracking radar technology” that isn’t affected by steel obstructions like parked cars, fencing and bus stops.
3AW understands the new cameras have already been tested in at least one low-speed street and hundreds of speeding drivers were snapped.
No fines have been dished out nor details recorded in the trial phase.
It is understood the new cameras are now subject to a tender process.
3AW Mornings producer Heidi Murphy described the change as a “game-changer”.
Top roads cop Doug Fryer was due to speak to Neil Mitchell about the test but later became unavailable.
