Prime Minister announces plan to avoid future citizenship drama
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal to tackle the dual citizenship saga.
All MPs and Senators will now be forced to disclose their citizenship status, to prove they’re eligible to sit in federal parliament.
Cabinet ministers agreed to the measures during a meeting in Canberra.
Malcolm Turnbull says it’s time to resolve the crisis.
“What we have seen is a concern that there is insufficient transparency,” Mr Turnbull said at a press conference on Monday.
“What this will do is ensure that the members’ personal obligation is brought squarely to the front of their mind and that they make these disclosures.”
The PM insisted it is not an “audit”.
Tom Elliott said the measures won’t fix the problem.
