Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called an election for May 18.

Mr Morrison visited the Governor General in Canberra this morning.

He flew back to the nation’s capital from Melbourne last night.

Nine News political editor Chris Uhlmann said Victoria shaped as the key battle ground.

“I think you’ll be sick of the sight of them (politicians) by the time the election is held,” he told Ross and John.

“Victoria is ground zero for the government.

“It has to hold everything it has there.

“If there’s a big sway in Victoria then it’ll be over before it starts.”

And Uhlmann said that would be a big challenge for Scott Morrison.

“I was speaking with a Victorian MP yesterday who said the problem with Scott Morrison is that he just doesn’t speak ‘Victorian’ – I think that’s probably not far from the truth,” he said.

“In some ways, he is a very Sydney-centric Prime Minister.”
