Students at one of Melbourne’s most prestigious private schools have been caught taunting ‘povo’ kids from state schools.

On a Facebook forum for VCE students, teens from Xavier College bullied their public school counterparts.

‘Just remember your parents work for mine, so don’t go complaining to them,’ one post read.

Female students who responded to abusive comments were told to ‘let the men handle business’.

Students from other schools – both private and public – joined in, hurling abuse at each other.

The Facebook forum has renewed debate about the attitudes harboured within the school system.

Neil Mitchell spoke to two principals, one from a private school and one from a state school, to ask: Is elitism alive and well in Australian schools?
