Activists protesting against the impending deportation of a group of asylum seekers have unfurled a banner on the Eastern Freeway.

Two professional abseilers – Katherine Woskett, 25, an arborist, and Hannah Patchett, 22, a professional rope access worker – hung a banner saying ‘Let them stay’ off the Yarra Bend bridge.

Traffic was disrupted as emergency services attended the scene and drivers slowed to watch what was happening.

The protesters eventually came down, but not before one of the pair – Ms Woskett – spoke defiantly to Neil Mitchell from the overpass and eventually hung up on him.
