VENUE: In the years of reviewing pubs, I can’t recall at any stage of describing a pub as happy. But today is a first: The Inkerman Hotel is just that. A fine old school pub providing comfort for all who enter.

It is a welcoming, fairly priced establishment, with each day/night of the week providing a genuine bang for the buck in food and drink. A theme may be seen as Irish, but it’s not overdone; just real hospitality from staff.

The layout of the Inkerman is relatively simple: Small room set side for the TAB, massive bar/dining area with screens aplenty covering a range of sports, music later in the week, with a pretty as a picture beer garden completing the area. Spread out, there’s plenty of room.

And here’s a first: “Sundays in the Bark”. Free dogs meal with every two human one purchased! ($9 if on your own with Fido). The pub is set up perfectly for this. With a Sunday happy hour (rare), any day of the week and the Inkerman is firing.

MENU: Where to start? South Melbourne dim sims ($5.5), potato cakes (2/$6), Irish chips/Irish curry (McDonnells) and melted cheese ($15) are also your starters to share a pot.

Bacon burger ($22.5), fish burger, barramundi ($22), chicken parma ($30), crisp salmon, fully plated ($36), to a 300g porterhouse, again fully plated for $43. This is comfort pub food 101.

Don’t skip the desserts. An insanely rich, sweet, chocolate semifreddo, cherries, candied coconut is a massive slab @ $12.

All Carlton products, Draught/Melbourne/Dry/Mountain Goat, served so well was $7/pot. However most of these will fall into the category of weekly specials.

Average Prices:

Entrees/starters: $13

Mains: $27 (steaks from $43)

Desserts: $12

Surcharges: None displayed. Card: Yes

Beer: Carlton D Pot, $7

Wine: $9.8pg

Roast: No

Tab: Yes
Pokies: No

Jack Ginnivan Steak Index (JGSI): This week; Inkerman, St Kilda East, 300g porterhouse, $43. Chips/salad//mash/veg/sauce (go the Irish curry).

HIGHLIGHT/S:

Main: Large chicken schnitty, $20 (on special, normally $27.50). Made in the kitchen, big, fresh, crisp, salad/chips spot on. Five days, lunch special. Bargain.

Something Different to Eat: Thai fish cakes, $14. Again another offering made in house, barra/salmon providing the fish, good size the sauce and herbs work in harmony. Real flavour in these.

Summary: The Inkerman pitches perfectly for those who like going to a pub for an uncomplicated, traditional offer.

Popular prices across everything it does, and the comfort levels as good as anywhere.

Happy staff, good times seven days a week, this is a place to love.

The Inkerman is a fine Melbourne pub.
