Victoria’s shortage of public housing will only get worse unless all political parties commit to building an extra 2000 homes each year, according to the Victorian Public Tenants Association.

There are currently 45,000 applications on the waiting list.

Margaret Guthrie, chair of the association, told Neil Mitchell that list was only growing as the state’s population increased.

She’s calling for action.

“We’re asking all political parties in Victoria to commit to building an additional 2000 properties per annum, for at least the next decade,” she said.

“We want to plan, Neil.

“Something has got to be done because the problem has been getting worse and worse.”
