Public sector union crowdfunds to pay for workers’ strike action
A union is asking for online donations from the public to fund a workers’ strike.
The Community and Public Sector Union has turned to online crowd-funding ahead of a planned strike for Border Force workers.
National Secretary Nadine Flood said ‘The Campaign Fund’ has already made $10,000.
Ms Flood said Border Force freight workers will strike from Monday next week.
‘A lot of them have lost a lot of money through strike action, and of course some of them have been stood down without pay,’ she said.
‘These guys are heading into their second Christmas with a wage freeze.’
But Neil Mitchell questioned the timing of the industrial action, noting it comes just weeks before Christmas.
Neil Mitchell: In the end, funding this industrial action could screw up the Christmas delivery of parcels.
Nadine Flood: It could have an impact on parcels and they will be taking further industrial action and they make no apology for that.
