A 10-week-old puppy has been brutally mauled to death by a fox in Williamstown.

The labradoodle had only been with the family for a week when a fox came out of the bushes and set upon the dog, which was in the backyard in the early hours after being let out to go to the toilet.

The 11 and 13-year-old boys who’d begged for the puppy for years are devastated.

Director at Wildpro Animal Damage, Wildlife & Pest Control, Alex Krstic, says it’s “not a common situation”, but it does happen.

“They’re quite happy to take them as an opportunistic feed,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“Pets including chickens, rabbits, kittens, guinea pigs, various other animals people keep for pets, are fairly high on the menu.”

Mr Krstic says there are up to 18 foxes per square kilometre in some parts of Melbourne, and they’re not going anywhere.

“They’re going to be here forever … and we need to be able to identify ways of continuing to control them,” he said.

The fox catcher urged Melburnians to do what they can to make sure their pets are safe.

“The security of your pet is important. If you’re aware a fox is in the area … put it in an area where it’s not going to become a prey item,” Mr Krstic said.
