Push for labelling of Australian salmon following disturbing expose

There’s a push for Australian salmon to be labelled when its farmed and artificially coloured, similar to the US.

A Four Corners expose on Monday night revealed some salmon was being coloured with a synthetic version of the naturally occurring astazanthin.

Bob Capelli, the executive vice president of global marketing at Algae Health Sciences, has worked for 15 years in the production of the natural version of astazanthin.

‘It has been used as colour additive for salmon for 25 years,’ he told Neil Mitchell.

He called for total transparency for consumers, but said he didn’t see it as a ‘safety issue.’

‘It’s a little scary, you’re eating something you don’t know much about,’ he said.

‘I think all consumers should know when they know when they are eating something containing synthetic substances.’
