Push to name new inner-city suburb after the man who invented the sandwich
A motion to go before Port Phillip City Council will propose to name a new suburb within Fisherman’s Bend after the fourth Earl of Sandwich.
As reported in the Herald Sun, the push to create the new inner-city suburb will go before council tomorrow.
Marcus Pearl, Port Phillip Councillor, told Ross and John the precinct should be named ‘Montague’.
“The first street in that area in the 1850s was named after John Montagu spelt M-O-N-T-A-G-U,” Cr Pearl said.
“He was the fourth Earl of Sandwich, not a particularly well-known person in the pages of history but he was the inventor of the sandwich itself.
“It had one of Australia’s first train stations in it in the 1850s and it’s all about connecting that area’s past with its future.”
