Residents in the Borough of Queenscliffe are fuming over an “insane” proposal to introduce 30km/h speed limits across the area.

Hundreds have signed a petition opposing the proposal, which the council put forward in its Draft Active Transport Strategy 2023–2031.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous,” resident Raelene McDonald, who started the petition opposing the idea, told Jacqui Felgate and Jimmy Bartel.

“I think the red flag for me if you read the draft is one of the lines is ‘We’re going to be the first municipality in Victoria to have a 30km/h speed limit’. So to me that’s not necessarily about safety so much as ‘look at us’. I think there’s a few egos who want to leave maybe a legacy behind on the council.”
