Much-loved Nine News anchor Peter Hitchener will be on our screens less in 2022.

Hitchener, 75, will be cutting back from reading the news five nights a week to four nights per week.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford says it’s “quite a dramatic move”, but it’ll likely keep the Melbourne icon on our screens for longer.

“You know what TV is like … if they don’t want you there, you’re not there. But they want him there for the longer term,” he told Ross and Russel.

“As I understand it, they see it as being about keeping him there for a much, much longer time.”

Peter Hitchener will continue reading the 6pm bulletin Monday to Thursday.

Alicia Loxley will take over the Friday night bulletin.
