The state’s peak motoring group is at odds with police over plans to reduce speed limits on unsealed country roads.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer wants all unsealed roads in regional Victoria dropped to 70km/h.

But Dave Jones from the RACV told Ross and John the laws should be flexible.

“It really is a case-by-case issue,” he said.

“The key issue with unsealed roads is their conditions can change – sometimes 70km/h can be too fast.

“The Yarra ranges, winding roads … lots of trees, 100km/h is probably never suitable.

“Whereas through the western plains of the wheat belt it could be quite reasonable.”
