Record number of students expected to opt for unscored VCE this year

A record number of year 12 students are expected to opt for an unscored VCE this year.

Last year one-in-10 students opted for an unscored VCE, the highest rate on record.

Choosing an unscored VCE means students pass year 12 but don’t have an ATAR.

Chief Learning Officer at Cluey Learning, Dr Selina Samuels, says the pressures of lockdowns have put additional stress on students.

“They’re taking pressure off themselves by just really opting out of the mark,” she told Ross and Russel.

“This year’s worth of Victorian students have really had a couple of horrible years, and even though ostensibly they’re through it, that stress has certainly continued on. That seems to be very clearly evidenced by these decisions.”

Dr Samuels urged parents and teachers to put less emphasis on final exams.

“We should be reminding them that actually it’s not the most important thing that they have to do in their lives,” she said.
