Reports of a budget blowout at Government House
Questions have been raised about the value of state based Governors, after revelations of massive overspending at Victoria’s Government House.
The Herald Sun reports a $700,000 budget blowout in just four months according to a whistleblower.
It’s also been revealed the cost to run Government House is $11 million a year.
Constitutional law expert Professor George Williams told Neil Mitchell it would be ‘complicated’ but not impossible to remove the Governor’s office from the constitution.
‘The question is though whether the community wants someone above politicians who can play that symbolic role,’ he said.
Neil Mitchell said it was time the government stepped in to bring the budget under control.
‘We need to get serious, the spending here is sloppy and adhoc.’
