Police are demanding to know why a group of tourists decided to go caving in East Gippsland late last night after a member of the group fell, sparking an eight-hour long rescue.

A Queenslandman, 24,  fell about 10 metres, landing on a ledge in a cave at Buchan about 11.30pm last night.

Emergency services were notified about 12.30am, sparking a major rescue operation.

CFA, Police, SES and paramedics were on the scene until he was rescued about 8am Wednesday.

The man’s injuries are not yet clear but they do appear to be life-threatening.
