Residents call for a fox cull, numbers out of control
According to residents, suburban Melbourne is being inundated by foxes. Some are calling for a cull to control numbers.
They’ve been spotted everywhere from Brunswick to the Docklands and Eastern suburbs.
Dr Bronwyn Hradsky, an ecologist at the University of Melbourne who completed a phd on foxes and feral cat populations, admits foxes can be in really high densities in urban areas – even higher than in the country.
Foxes have been responsible for the decline and extinction of over 50 native mammals, as well as some bird and reptile species, so it’s no surprise some want them gone. Tom says if they just stuck to eating possums, people probably wouldn’t mind so much!
