There are reports shoplifting is on the rise as more businesses reveal they’ve been impacted.

Chief executive officer of the Australian Retailers Association, Paul Zahra, says the number of shoplifting crimes has increased in the last six months.

“It has been an issue in the industry for a long time, but we’ve seen an elevated level of retail crime in … the past six months so we’ve now got public companies coming out describing their results and disclosing they’ve got a real issue with crime in their stores,” he told Jimmy Bartel.

One supermarket has taken to social media in an attempt to catch individuals who have been caught on CCTV stealing.

Director at Drake Supermarkets, John-Paul Drake says the thefts has cost the chain millions.

“We’ve calculated about $10 million loss in what we call … unclaimed theft – what we’ve noticed is that it has increased and skyrocketed for those people,” he told Jimmy Bartel.
