A recently retired Qantas pilot has blasted an airline push to have just one pilot in the cockpit of passenger jets, instead of two.

Richard de Crespigny says the idea is a cost-cutting measure which could have dire consequences.

“(With) a single pilot … there’s no checks and balances, there’s no safety mechanisms,” he told Ross and Russel.

“We need two fully confident people who can fix it in the air because you can’t stop and you can’t call for help.

“People who don’t fly don’t understand the threats and the risks in the sky and pilots spend a lot of time fixing a lot of the engineering that fails regularly.”
