A retired US Army Major says Russia’s military has been exposed as ‘inept’ and understandably wants to avoid urban warfare in Ukraine.

Ross and Russel have continually voiced their surprise at what appears to be a lack of Russian troops on the streets throughout their invasion.

Major John Spencer, Chair of Urban Warfare Studies with the Madison Policy Forum, said he wasn’t surprised Russia was first trying to bomb Ukraine into submission.

“Urban warfare is called the great equaliser for a reason,” he said on 3AW Breakfast.

“No military wants to be on the streets.

“It’s like walking into a fight with your eyes closed.

“You don’t know where the enemy could be (and) their defence is already established.

“It’s the worst case scenario for them.”

He said the situation was not progressing well for Russia.

“We all thought they were the big bad bear, and they’re showing they are not,” Major Spencer said.
