Greens leader Richard Di Natale says “somebody had to take a stand” over the “sexist filth” in the Senate, explaining what led to the ugly scenes in Parliament on Tuesday.

It began with Barry O’Sullivan saying Sarah Hanson-Young had “a bit of Nick Xenophon in her”.

Mr Di Natale then called Mr O’Sullivan a “pig” and refused to withdraw the comment, leading to him being suspended.

Speaking with Tom Elliott, Mr Di Natale said he regretted nothing.

He said it had been a continual pattern of behaviour from several male Senators.

“It’s got to stop,” he said.

“If it was just any other workplace, you wouldn’t tolerate it.”
