The surging road toll has sparked a push to introduce a new initiative for learner drivers.

St John Ambulance Victoria chief executive Gordon Botwright wants first aid training for learner drivers to become mandatory.

“What we’d like to see is the Victorian Government say ‘Well done for taking the initiative, we’ll take five hours off your mandatory 120 hours’,” he told Ross and Russel.

There have been 135 lives lost on Victoria’s roads so far this year, up from 97 at the same time last year.
