?The situation has turned violent at City Square, with reports homeless protesters have been assaulted in at least three separate incidents this week.

Homeless people illegally camping out in tents near Melbourne Aquarium are believed to have been responsible for some of the attacks.

Unlike those at City Square on Collins Street, the homeless people near the Aquarium are not complying with council laws to take down structures.

One protester had a bottle smashed on their head on Monday, while two others are accused of attacking others and demanding money.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told Neil Mitchell the reports were particularly concerning.

‘I’ve had an allegation of an assault from a trader in the square,’ he said on 3AW.

‘Things are changing there a bit, so I’m monitoring that very closely.

‘We’ve had our own services providers say they’re now concerned about operating in that area.’
