A surge in shark sightings along the coast and in Port Phillip Bay this summer is failing to stop people from getting in the water.

Fairhaven beach has been closed for a third day in a row after around half a dozen great whites were spotted.

There were also brief closures at Elwood and St Kilda beaches at the weekend.

Greg Scott from Life Saving Victoria was in the chopper spotting sharks and has told 3AW Breakfast when they tell people to get out of the water – they mean it.

‘We’re seeing sharks probably within 10 metres of the shoreline, maybe even less,’ he explained.

‘When we sound the siren we want people to get out of the water.’
