A live cattle ship on its way to China has been stranded in Port Phillip for days after breaking down on the weekend.

An off-air caller to the Rumour File broke the news, later confirmed by the Geelong Harbour Master.

The Girolando Express departed Geelong for China but only made it as far as Port Phillip.

Repairs have now been carried out and the ship is due to head back to Geelong in the next day to pick up more feed for the livestock, before sailing on to China.

3AW Breakfast has been told there are up to 4000 cows on board.
