RUMOUR CONFIRMED

A Melbourne pub has taken a stand against a trendy Victorian craft brewer, banning its beer and accusing it of a big ego.

As first flagged on the Rumour File last week, the Great Northern Hotel in Carlton North has stopped serving Woodend’s Holgate Brewhouse.

The Rathdowne Street pub says Holgate would only provide Extra Special Bitter kegs if the Northern also put other Holgate beers on tap.

“We are proudly independent with no tap contracts. Even CUB and Lion respect this,” Great Northern management posted on Facebook.

“Unfortunately it seems now Holgate with their shiny new brewery, government grants and new big ego they have forgotten bars that supported them when they were a small pub brewer.”

The “government grants” refers to the $1.5 million the brewhouse received from the Andrews government earlier this year.
