RUMOUR CONFIRMED: Plan to demolish Etihad Stadium, build new venue near MCG

RUMOUR CONFIRMED: An ambitious plan to build a new football stadium next to the MCG has been revealed.

‘Undisclosed Location’ told 3AW Breakfast’s Rumour File last Friday a ‘feasibility study’ had been undertaken by a ‘major football league’ about the possibility of building a 55,000 seat stadium near the MCG.

That plan was made public on Tuesday night.

Any decision on a new venue, which would cost around $1 billion to build, is said to be dependent on the sale of Etihad Stadium, which the AFL is due to buy back in 2025.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has reportedly briefed Premier Daniel Andrews about the idea.

‘Victoria Stadium’ has been suggested as the new venue’s name, but Ross Stevenson has other ideas.

‘When built, said stadium will from here on be referred to as ‘Rumour File’ Stadium,’ he said.
