Rumour File: ATO has handed out an official notice to Uber and their drivers

The Rumour File was told Uber has sent the details of every driver to the Australian Tax Office.

‘Tax Fraud’ said every Uber driver was sent an e-mail yesterday saying all their details had been sent off in response to official notices.

3AW Breakfast has obtained the e-mail, which says information such as bank details to a driver’s last holiday has been sent off.

No confirmation from Uber has yet been made, despite the ATO confirming the official notices.

Paul Drum, Head of Policy at CPA Australia, says the tax office has “information gathering powers”.

“They usually start with access powers to your records, which they don’t exercise in an extreme way,” Mr. Drum told Ross and John.

“But they can also give you a notice.”

Every individual Uber driver must register for the GST, but Mr. Drum says these notices could prove inconvenient.

“They [drivers] don’t want the bug-bear of lodging business activity statements all the time.

“So the ongoing compliance burden is going to agitate them.”
