The age of gum trees in the Dandenong Ranges may be to blame for a noticeable decline of the health of the trees, as heard on The Rumour File.

This morning Ross and John were told gum trees are”dying en masse in the Dandenong Ranges from the Tourist Rd to Burwood Highway”.

3AW Breakfast then received calls from listeners from as far as Drouin and Wye River reporting a similar problem.

Arborist Will Moore said it could be due to the age of the trees.

“A lot of the gum trees here in the ranges are of similar age,” Will said.

“I think that a lot of them here are about the same age because it was all logged 150 years ago pretty heavily.

“So they’re kind of rounding out to the top end of their lifespan.”
