Russia-Turkey on war path: Former MP Aykan Erdemir

A former Turkish MP fears rising tensions between Turkey and Russia could end in war.

A Russian fighter jet was shot down over Turkey overnight, prompting a war of words between the two countries.

Aykan Erdemir, a former Turkish parliamentarian and senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, told Neil Mitchell about the reaction at home.

‘It is a dangerous situation and it can escalate further,’ he said.

Mr Erdmir said the relationship was warm only two years ago.

‘But today, the two countries are almost ready to enter war.

‘I would argue there’s already a proxy war going on (in Syria).’
