A new survey from the Salvation Army has found one in 20 vulnerable people are being forced to eat from rubbish bins, more than half of disadvantaged people are skipping meals, and 23 per cent are eating expired or spoiled food.

Salvation Army Major, Brendan Nottle, has been left “heartbroken” by the findings, stating people are doing everything they can to “make ends meet” but they still can’t.

“There are people coming in now who used to donate to the Salvation and organisations like us,” he said on 3AW Breakfast

Mr Nottle said they are seeing a change of demographic in the people seeking help, with “particularly mums coming in with young kids” at night time.

Salvation Army’s Red Shield is currently running until the end of June, and the national Doorknock will take place this weekend. Donations are appreciated via their website or in person.
