Sam Mitchell has revealed he could move to West Coast.

The Hawthorn great, and reigning best and fairest winner, dropped a trade period bombshell by revealing he was open to a move to the Eagles.

Sports Today host Dwayne Russell explained the shock announcement as a game-changer for the AFL.

‘He is a Hawthorn icon, but he’s moving to the Eagles because it’s a good business move,’ Russell said.

‘It’s a good business move for Sam Mitchell himself, he’ll get an assistant coaches role out of it. It’s a good business move for Hawthorn who will get some extra salary cap room for Tom Mitchell and probably Jaegar Omeara.’

‘But too bad if you’re a kid and your parents just forked out for a Hawthorn number 5 jumper.’

‘If I stay at Hawthorn that’s great, if I move to West Coast I’m excited by a new prospect,’ Mitchell said on Wednesday, his 34th birthday.

The former captain has been in contact with the Eagles for the past 12 months.

Coach Alastair Clarkson has suggested Mitchell ‘might be interested’ in a move to the Eagles to further his coaching credentials.

He is contracted for next season and any possible deal would likely involve a future coaching role.

‘It was a pro-active move by Adam Simpson,’ 3AW Football’s Sam McClure explained.
